The Iron Lady: Directed by
Phyllida Lloyd and starring Meryl Streep,
Jim Broadbent and Richard E. Grant, THE IRON
LADY tells, through a series of memories
recounted by the now
eighty year-old Margaret Thatcher, the story
a woman who smashed the barriers of gender
and class in a male dominated world. Deeply
moving, the film is about power and the
price which Margaret Thatcher paid for it in
her private life as well as her political
life. THE IRON LADY is an insightful and
powerful portrait of an extraordinary and
complex
woman. Meryl Streep’s performance, possibly
the finest of her entire career, may very
well win her the Best Actress Oscar for
2012. Not to be missed.

J.Edgar: Leonardo DiCaprio
delivers a riveting historical portrayal
spread over 50 years in the role of J. Edgar
Hoover in Clint Eastwood’s J. EDGAR. During
his lifetime, J Edgar Hoover would rise to
be the most powerful man in America. As head
of the FBI for nearly 50 years, he would
stop at nothing to protect his country.
Through eight presidents and three wars,
Hoover waged battle against threats both
real and perceived, often bending the rules
to keep his countrymen safe. Understanding
that knowledge is power and fear creates
opportunities, he used both to gain
unprecedented influence and to build a
reputation that was both formidable and
untouchable. In J. EDGAR, DiCaprio delivers
a powerful performance which is certain to
gain him an Oscar nomination for this
fascinating portrait of an extraordinary
man.
War Horse: Steven Spielberg
has produced one of his most endearing
dramas in the superb WAR HORSE which is set
during World War I. When farm boy Albert’s
(Jeremy Irvine)
father is forced to sell his beloved horse
Joey to the British cavalry Albert is
heartbroken but he swears that he will see
Joey again. Joey forms a bond with another
conscripted horse, the beautiful black
Topthorn. When tragedy strikes their
masters, Joey and Topthorn become the
property of the German army. Amid the
carnage of battle,
Joey struggles to get back to Albert who
himself enlisted in the hope of finding Joey
again. WAR HORSE will both inspire you and
touch you deeply. We highly recommend this
film which is destined to become another of
Spielberg’s masterpiece portraits of the
horrors of war.

The Descendants: Rich in
human emotions, THE DESCENDANTS is a funny
and sharp film about all kinds of human
desires and miseries. George Clooney plays a
father of two daughters who is dealing with
the impending death of his wife, who is in a
coma after a boating accident, the
negotiations to sell 25,000 acres of land
owned by his family for generations, and the
new knowledge that his wife had been having
an affair. The rapport which he develops
with his two daughters in the course of the
movie gives it its emotional punch. THE
DESCENDANTS is witty, sometimes dark, but
always moving.

The Grey:
In THE GREY, Liam Neeson, in one of his finest performances,
is an unlikely hero who is forced to lead a
group of roughnecks in their fight to
survive and return home when their plane
crashes into the remote Alaskan wilderness.
Battling injuries and merciless weather, the
men must escape the icy elements as well as
a vicious pack of rogue wolves on the hunt
before time runs out. Tension and danger
make THE GREY compelling viewing.

Carnage:
Featuring brilliant performances
from Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, Christoph
Waltz and John C. Reilly, CARNAGE is a dark
but very, very funny comedy of manners. Two
married couples meet at the apartment of one
of the couples to sort out a problem between
their respective sons which has resulted in
a very violent fight. Everyone is so very,
very polite as it starts, but the longer
they stay in that apartment, the more things
begin to come to the surface: class rifts,
political differences, base instincts and
sheer nastiness. CARNAGE takes a blowtorch
to their middle-class sense of civility with
hilarious consequences.

Hugo:
Martin Scorsese’s
brilliant HUGO begins with a magical
representation of a wintry 1930’s Paris and
introduces the audience to the plucky hero
of the film, Hugo Cabret. After the untimely
death of his loving, somewhat eccentric
father (Jude Law). Hugo is taken in as an
apprentice to his alcoholic Uncle Claude
(Ray Winstone), helping the drunkard to
maintain and repair the many ornate clocks
in the central station of Paris. There he
meets toy shop owner George Melies (Ben
Kinglsey), the immortal pioneer of the
French film industry. Melies was the first
to use the magic of special effects in his
films, and HUGO celebrates with amazing
technical inventiveness the birth of modern
cinema in a heart-warming and delightful
film.

The Artist: Considered by
all who have seen it as a serious contender
for the 2012 Best Picture Oscar, THE ARTIST
is a silent melodrama set in the Hollywood
of the 1920s, a world of flappers and
fedoras. It tells the story of George
Valentin, a dashing silent movie star who
dismisses the new-fangled “talkies” as a fad
and sets about making his own silent film.
The story revolves around his relationship
with Peppy Miller, the young ingénue chorus
girl whom he plucks from obscurity for his
doomed project. THE ARTIST is a breath of
fresh air in an industry overwhelmed by
special effects and 3D – unforgettable in
the best sense of the word.

The Woman In Black: Adapted
from a classic Victorian mystery novel by
Wilkie Collins, THE WOMAN IN BLACK is a dark
tale set in a dark and dangerous landscape.
When a friendless old widow dies in the
seaside town of Crythin, a young solicitor
(Daniel Radcliffe) is sent by his firm to
settle the estate. The lawyer finds the
townspeople reluctant to talk about or go
near the woman’s dreary home and no one will
explain or even acknowledge the menacing
woman in black he keeps seeing. Ignoring the
townspeople’s warnings, he goes to the house
where he discovers its horrible history and
becomes ensnared in its even more horrible
legacy. Building to a truly frightening
conclusion, THE WOMAN IN BLACK is a story
which will haunt you long after you leave
the cinema.

Young Adult:
The wonderful comedy YOUNG ADULT
introduces us to Mavis Gray, a 37 year-old
writer of fiction for young adults who made
it out of her hometown but never really got
over her small town sweetheart, Buddy. Mavis
has it all, she has a little toy dog to
carry around in a bag on her shoulder, she
drives a Mini Cooper with a Victoria’s
Secret bag in the back, she does what she
wants when she wants. And, oh yes, she is a
real bitch. She sets out to win Buddy back
after he foolishly sends her a picture of
his new-born baby. Charlize Theron delivers
a consistently engrossing performance,
ensuring that Mavis, despite her
less-than-sunny personality, becomes a
compelling and surprisingly sympathetic
figure. YOUNG ADULT may gain Chalize Theron
an Oscar nomination. It certainly will make
you laugh.
