WHITGIFT FILM THEATRE
NEWS FEBRUARY 2012
2012 will be an important and
exciting year for the
Whitgift Film Theatre as we will
celebrate our 40th
ANNIVERSARY in September. Stay tuned for
announcements of some of the special events which we
hope to organise for that very special occasion.
Our programme for
February
includes the four films below that we
would especially like to recommend.
|
 |
The first in the hugely successful
Swedish trilogy by Steig Larsson and featuring outstanding
performances from Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara
THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON
TATTOO is one of the most eagerly-awaited films
of 2012. Discredited journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Craig) and
mysterious computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Mara) discover that
even the wealthiest families have skeletons in their closet as
they seek to solve the mystery surrounding the 40 year-old
murder of Harriet Vanger whose uncle believes she may have been
killed by a member of her own family. The deeper they dig for
the truth, the greater the peril they find themselves in from
the family members who will stop at nothing to keep their secret
buried with Harriet. THE GIRL
WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO is intensely atmospheric
and genuinely thrilling - a highly recommended film. |

Blasting into overdrive from the minute
the gates open and never letting up,
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL
finds the Impossible Mission Force (IMF) shut down when it is
implicated in the bombing of the Kremlin. Ethan Hunt (Tom
Cruise) and his team (Paula Patton and Jeremy Renner) are forced
to go rogue in order to stop a deadly terrorist from launching
nuclear weapons and starting a global nuclear war. Expect
fast-paced action and thrilling special effects as the team
confront one of their most challenging assignments. |

Directed by Phyllida Lloyd and
starring Meryl Streep, Jim
Broadbent and Richard E. Grant,
THE IRON LADY
tells, through a series of
memories recounted by the now
eighty year-old Margaret
Thatcher, the story of a woman
who smashed the barriers of
gender and class in a male
dominated world. Deeply moving,
the film is about power and the
price which Margaret Thatcher
paid for it in her private life
as well as her political life.
THE IRON LADY
is an insightful and powerful
portrait of an extraordinary and
complex woman. Meryl Streep’s
performance, possibly the finest
of her entire career, may very
well win her the Best Actress
Oscar for 2012. Not to be
missed. |

Leonardo DiCaprio delivers a
riveting historical portrayal
spread over 50 years in the role
of J. Edgar Hoover in Clint
Eastwood’s
J. EDGAR.
During his lifetime, J Edgar
Hoover would rise to be the most
powerful man in America. As head
of the FBI for nearly 50 years,
he would stop at nothing to
protect his country. Through
eight presidents and three wars,
Hoover waged battle against
threats both real and perceived,
often bending the rules to keep
his countrymen safe.
Understanding that knowledge is
power and fear creates
opportunities, he used both to
gain unprecedented influence and
to build a reputation that was
both formidable and untouchable.
In
J. EDGAR,
DiCaprio delivers a powerful
performance which is certain to
gain him an Oscar nomination for
this fascinating portrait of an
extraordinary man. |
